A toggle machine uses three platens and a mechanical toggle linkage to generate clamping force, holding pressure with minimal hydraulic input once locked. A two-platen machine uses only two platens with hydraulic cylinders acting directly on the tie bars.
The practical trade-off: toggle machines offer fast cycles, high structural stability, and the best value per tonne for general-purpose production at smaller-to-mid tonnages, while two-platen machines deliver the same clamping force in a shorter overall length and become the better choice above roughly 500 tonnes, particularly for large molds or where floor space is constrained. For most production from 88 to 2,800 tonnes, hydraulic toggle is the standard choice.
Servo-hydraulic drive cuts energy consumption by up to 80% compared to older fixed-pump hydraulic machines, because the servo motor only consumes power when the machine is actively moving.
During the holding phase, when the toggle is locked, energy use drops to near zero. On machines equipped with e-Drive™ electric plasticising (standard on MK7S, optional on selected MK6 platforms), plasticising energy consumption is reduced by a further 10–25%.
